Grand Rapids City Income Tax Increase: The Grand Rapids City Commission voted to place an income tax increase before the voters in May. Four years ago, the voters (by a razor-thin margin) approved a temporary income tax increase. City officials promised that this tax would be a temporary measure and that the revenue would be used for the express purpose of transforming the city and its budget so that such tax increases would never be called for again. Now, as this transformative tax is set to expire, and at a time when the city is running a surplus, city officials seek to break their earlier promise and propose a new income tax increase to replace the expiring provision. Worse yet, they propose to schedule this as a special election for May 2014, rather than at the regularly scheduled August or November elections. This special election is likely to result in lower turnout from city voters and will cost the city an extra $80,000.
